Admission Requirements and Process
The Master in Public Health program at UC Davis is open to individuals (including medical and veterinary students) with an interest in disease prevention and community health.
The application deadline is January 15. It is highly recommended that applicants apply online at:
http://mph.ucdavis.edu/Admissions/Application/app_login.php. Admissions instructions and a hard copy of the application are available at http://mph.ucdavis.edu/Forms.php. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by January 15 of the year of anticipated admission. Admission would be for Summer II session, which begins in early August.
Academic requirements
1. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with at least a 3.0 grade-point average
(GPA) on graduation. Degrees must be conferred before the program starts in August.
2. The following prerequisite courses are required for admission
- mathematics (equivalent at least to UC Davis' pre-calculus Math 12 and Short Calculus 16A or 16B courses),
- biological sciences (equivalent at least to UC Davis' Biology BIS 1A and 1B or 2A and 2B courses),
- social sciences (for example, courses equivalent to UC Davis’ General Psychology PSC 1, or Cultural Anthropology ANT 2, and Introduction to Sociology SOC 1 courses),
- One course in the physical sciences is also required (for example, courses equivalent to UC Davis’ General Chemistry CHE 2A or Principles of Physics PHY 1A or 7A). The physical sciences requirement may be waived for otherwise well-qualified applicants.
3. Complete and submit results from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). For reporting scores, use the Institution Code:
4834 and Department Code: 0616. Applicants must take the GRE by the December test date to insure the scores
arrive by the application deadline. The only exception to this are current medical students or holders of the MD/DO
degree, who may submit MCAT scores. All GRE and MCAT scores must be taken within 7 years of application.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), CN 6000,
Princeton, NJ 08541-6000; (609) 921-9000. You can contact the ETS directly via email at gre-info@ets.org. Both
the GRE and ETS are available on the Internet.
4. Students for whom English is not the native language are required to take the TOEFL and achieve a minimum score
of 600 (paper examination), 213 (computer-based examination) or 82 (internet-based examination). Information and
an application for the TOEFL can be obtained at most US Consulates or at
TOEFL® Services, Educational Testing
Service, Post Office Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey, 08541-6151, U.S.A. E-mail to: toefl@ets.org or on the
internet at: http://www.toefl.org. For reporting scores, please use Institution Code 4834, Department Code 50.
The MPH program cannot review an application until all of the above application components are received. Inquiries concerning application procedures or any other aspects of the program and requests for forms for admission to the MPH should be directed to the address below. Applications are reviewed by the Admissions and Advancement Committee. An interview may be required. A letter of admissions, wait listing, or denial will be sent in the late winter or early spring.
